The Tata LPTA 1623 6x6 truck was developed as a private venture to meet a possible Indian Army requirement. For a long time Indian Army was obtaining Czech-designed Tatra trucks. However procurement of Tatras has been put on hold due to a bribery case and Indian Army was looking for a replacement. Tata Motors developed not only 8x8 version, but the whole family of heavy high mobility military trucks. There are 4x4, 8x8 and even 12x12 versions.
The truck is fitted with a central tyre inflation system. This vehicle has good cross-country mobility and can go over all kinds of rough terrain. After preparation this military truck fords water obstacles up to 1.4 m deep.
